This feature can also store contact info for your organization in Caravel's LDAP directory.  After these addresses are found, they are then displayed in your site. This is particularly useful for large distributed organizations with thousands of affiliates, like denominations, franchises and national non-profits. Thousands of sites can be generated off of corporate data with basic contact info displayed.

Dynamic Site http://caravelcms.org/Features/FeaturesList:CB1=dynamic.html@CB2
Dynamic Site

This feature is for super users only. It is designed for ePortfolios and personal websites in a University setting. The feature allows you to specify LDAP search criteria, that if matched will authenticate a user and generate a Caravel site in a predefined directory. For example, a university wanting to offer personal web space to students could specify that someone authenticating successfully whose PersonAffiliation = student will get a new site generated in the users directory.

1.  Create a site that you would like to be used for web space.  People in your directory will start off with their site looking like this original.  This will allow you to have consistency even though there are many users inputting their own content.

2.  From the Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar, choose Add Feature.

3.  Choose DyanmicSite.

4.  A pop up window will ask you for different information about your potential users.  The fields will already have some default information supplied for you.   Make sure that the attributes set in LDAP match up with those that you set.  Click Save and Preview.

5.  A login box will appear for your users to log in.

Navigator http://caravelcms.org/Features/FeaturesList:CB1=navigator.html@CB2
Navigator

The navigator function allows you to set up third level navigation.  This is the navigation located in the left column.  It allows you yet another way to navigate quickly and easily through your Caravel pages.

1. From the Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar, choose Add Feature.

2. From the menu that appears choose Navigator.  A popup will appear giving you several options.   Under the Navigation tab you can choose the base page, where the list will be built from and the menu style.

Base page: this option allows you to choose which page your menu will begin from.  More than likely you will want to choose this page so the navigation will be relative to the page you are on.  Play with this option and figure out what is best for you.

Build list form: this drop down is asking where to draw data from.  Normally you will want to draw from siblings.  However, if you want to navigate your way back to the beginning of the site you may want to choose path or tree from top level.  Again, the best way to learn what you want to use is to play with the options.

Menu style: you may be looking for a certain look for your third level navigation menu; the menu style options allow you to find that look.  Following is a basic description of what each option will look like.
Vertical buttons: navigation is listed in a table.
Vertical list/tree: navigation is listed as links on separate lines.
List: navigation is listed as links on the same line.
Dropdown list: navigation is listed in a dropdown menu.
Tabs: navigation is put in tabs similar to the navigation tabs of Caravel.
Custom HTML: use your own template for navigation.
3.  Add a header.  The header tab allows you to either have no header or specify a custom header.

New folder viewer http://caravelcms.org/Features/FeaturesList:CB1=newfolderviewr.html@CB2 Open Folder

The Open Folder command (Folder Viewer) offers many options for displaying content in useful ways that go far beyond what can be done with a traditional HTML editor. If you master the Folder Viewer, you will have mastered many of the advanced techniques possible with Caravel.

Common uses for Folder Viewer blocks:

* Displaying randomized photos
* Displaying the contents of an archive
* As a strategy for delivering a large number of documents without making a page for each document.
* Displaying the most recently uploaded file or files.
* For blog-style content
* For scheduling content where one file is replaced by another on a particular date.

The old and new folder viewers look as if they are very different.  If you look closer though, you will find many similarities.  You will also find that the new folder viewer is much easier to use than the old one.  There are many more options to choose from but these options will help you make a better folder viewer.  If you would like to access your files skip ahead to Step four: Refine file list.  All of the files in the folder are listed in the refine file listing.

Folder Viewer Basics

To create a Folder Viewer, choose Open Folder from the Add Block menu Add block icon on the Edit Column bar. The Folder Viewer window will open.

1.  Selecting a folder.
The first step in creating a folder viewer is selecting the folder from which the data will come from.  Navigate down to your folder, highlight it and then select next.

Note:  You will need to create a folder before going into the folder viewer option.  To do this, go to Tools on the Edit Page Bar and choose File Manager.  In the upper right hand corner you will find the words add folder.  Name your folder something easy for you to find again.  Now, either create HTML files and save them into that folder or move them from another folder.

2. Choose list type
There are numerous different ways in which you could choose to display the information in your folder.

Step 2
  • Basic list
The simplest list. File names/titles only, one per line.
  • Navigation buttons
Similar to the basic list, but recreates a "navigation menu" feel.
  • Table of contents
This list includes file names/titles, authors, and creation dates.
  • Photo album
Intended for viewing folders containing many images.
  • Download list
Intended for a list of files that will be downloaded. Includes file size and an icon indicating file type.
  • Dropdown list
A simple list of file names/titles in a dropdown menu.
  • Blog
Intended for presenting multiple shortened files along with their author and title. If you wish to have only a preview appear then include Mon, 25 Apr 2005 19:16:38 GMT Project Manager http://caravelcms.org/Features/FeaturesList:CB1=project.html@CB2
    Project Manager

This feature opens a program, which you can use to assign projects to the different members in your organization.  This feature allows people privileges to look at projects, complete them, and then record what was done to complete it.

    Creating a Project Manager

    1. Create a new tab and label it project manager or something similar.  This will be a tab that you do not publish so only those who have access to your Caravel site will have access to this feature.

    2. From the Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar, choose Add Feature.

    3. From the menu that appears choose Project Manager.

    4. Depending on the size of your column, Project Manger will either pop up in a new window or directly on your page.

    5. Click on the Projects Option button on the far right of the screen.  You will be prompted to name your project.  After you have a suitable name click on the add button.  You have created a project manager.  Now all you need to do is add the projects.

Allowing people to use your Project Manager

In order to have people work in your Project Manager they must first have a Caravel account.  Once everyone you would like to be a part of your project has a Caravel account you can add them to your Project Manger.

    1. Click on Manage Members, the last button in the list.

    2. The new screen displays three boxes labled People, Project Members, and Groups.   You can add to the Project Members from either the people or the groups.  If you add from the people side those added will only be able to see the title of the tasks but not edit them.  If you create a group and then add people into the group those in the group will have full privileges.

    3. Create a group by clicking on Group Management in the Group box.  Now, come up with a group name and click the add group button.  Highlight the name of your group and begin to add people through the search function.

    4. There are two ways to search for people.  The easiest is to type in a person's userID followed by the name of your site, i.e. janey.default.  However, if you do not know their userID type in their name followed by an asterisk, i.e. Jane*.

    4. Once you find someone you want to add to your project, click on their name, and, using the arrow keys, move them to the Group Members list.

    5.  Once you have all the members added click on Project Access in the lower left hand corner.

    6.  Add your group to the Project Members.

    Adding tasks

    1. Click on the Add Task button.

    2. A new screen will appear where you can name the task, set a start and end date, set a priority, choose the owner of the project and choose a group.  If you want everyone to have access to your project choose to add your group.  You can then specify their privileges on that project allowing them to read and write in the log.

    3. Once the task is added a new screen will appear with all your tasks listed.  You can input data on how the task is progressing by clicking on the task name or on the log selected task button.  Here, people can log what they have done with the project and the percentage they have completed.

    4. Continue through the three last steps until you have added all the tasks you need to have completed.

    Public Uploader http://caravelcms.org/Features/FeaturesList:CB1=publicupload.html@CB2
    Public Uploader

Do you have items that you would like to have others upload?  Maybe you are a congregation and you are working to put different pictures up on your website.  The problem is that the pictures are spread out between different people in the congregation.  Having each person bring in their photos and scanning them would take a large amount of time.  It is for situations like this that the Caravel team created the Public Uploader, which allows the public to upload files to a specific file on your Caravel site.

    1. From the Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar, choose Add Feature.

    2. Choose PublicUploader.

    3.  Choose a destination where you would like the files saved that the public uploads.  Only people with access to your website can change this location.  Then, set the location as default.

    4.  You have now set up your Public Uploader.  When you log out you will see the Public Uploader with the field for Destination gone and only the Upload File available.

    5.  Tell your public about this feature and save yourself hours of uploading!

    Search Tools

Caravel offers three different types of searches that you can put on your Web site.  Each of these searches can be found by going to Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar and choosing Add Feature.  Then look for the following names.

    Organization Search
    - This feature was designed for denominations and large distributed organizations. It displays a search box for finding different types of organizations. It also offers advanced search capability and allows you to browse by organization type.

Google Search - Puts a Google search box in your site that searches both the Internet and your site using Google's index.  This makes it easy for any user to search Google to find out more about either your organization or something your organization does.

Bible Gateway - this search is idea for churches that want to offer a concordance-style Bible search using Bible Gateway's excellent search service.  Now users don't have to leave the comforts of their computer in order to read the Bible.

    Include URL

This feature allows you to put another site within your site.  You can also use it to put two parts of your own site together.  If you want to have a window that will scroll through one window while keeping your other window open you have found the feature you were looking for.

    1. From the Add Block Menu on the Edit Column/Header/Footer bar, choose Add Feature.

    2. Choose Include URL.

    3. Type in the website URL of the site you would like included in your website.

    4. Decide how you would like the URL to appear on your page. An iframe is an inline frame that contains another document. Not checking the iframe box will simply add the page referred to by your URL to your webpage. Checking the box will create your URL within an iframe, which can be navigated within the site.
